I missed a day of posting for my blog! I know, you can’t believe it! It’s true. Work, life and family took priority. So, I am not perfect. It’s good I know that and accept that because the music business is SO far from perfect. If it were perfect, everyone who ever wanted to sing to an audience would have a record deal, a worldwide stadium tour booked, and all the fancy travel arrangements and dressing room fixings included.
Or maybe, the music business is perfectly imperfect. Not everyone will have that dream scenario come true for them. However, if an artist does all of the little things for a substantial period of time, they will achieve their perfect outcome.
I will be honest; I have not read too many books, start to finish, that were not required as a part of my education. However, the Vince Lombardi biography, When Pride Still Mattered, by David Maraniss is one that I did read, start to finish. It brought me joy, revelation, laughter and tears. Needless to say, this book moved me. I love NFL football, so I was already keen to learn more about Vince Lombardi, for whom the Super Bowl Champion trophy is named the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
If you ever have time and want a little motivation, google Vince Lombardi quotes. There are some amazing ones about teamwork, faith and motivation. I learned from the book that Lombardi would perform give corporate conference appearances and speeches. There is one quote by Vince Lombardi that is my favourite. I have heard versions of this quote from basketball coaching greats John Wooden and Geno Auriemma. This particular quote from Lombardi is, “Gentlemen, we will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence.”
I may be late on some of my blog posts, but it would be excellent if I had 365 posts in 2024. I want to post the perfect amount on my social media channels, but I won’t. Instead, I will be readily present in my social postings and responsive to comments. I want every song I do to sound perfect every time, but a live show is not a recording session. You can’t just edit an improperly played chord or autotune when you sing out of key. If you have ever heard a truly live performance from one of the great music performers, you have heard them sing off-key or play an off-note. Those performances are perfectly imperfect. It is the true and perfect essence of who that person is as a performer and human being. They are chasing perfection. Although they do not reach it, it is excellence when they deliver their music artistry as performers. That is why they are considered among the greats.
I am chasing perfection in everything I do as a performing artist, but I look forward to some excellence in my performances and recordings in 2024. And I just may see your perfectly imperfect dance moves! I have some of those.
