The Grammy Awards have just taken place. As a singer and songwriter, the Grammys have always been the barometer by which a career is measured. If a person is nominated or has won a Grammy award, this is included in the lead sentence of the introduction, like, ‘two-time Grammy award winner,’ or a ‘Grammy-nominated producer.’ It is one of those things that you could dream about it for years and think it will never happen.
Then, you have an amazing artist like Olivia Rodrigo, who in, 2022, won three Grammys at the age of 18. How long had she seriously been performing and writing? May five or ten years? No one knows how long it will take to reach a certain level of artistry so that you are recognised by your peers. Seeing Olivia Rodrigo ascend as quickly as she did is inspiring. However, I am in the category of dreaming of just being nominated sometime in the next ten years. It would be amazing to attend the awards show, be recognised by your peers, and then attend the after-parties and dance all night. That will be good enough for me.
The crazy thing is that if I commit and deliver on what I plan to do over the next ten years, I think I will be nominated as a singer, songwriter, member of a band, or producer. Maybe some of that Jamal self-belief is having an impact on me! Some of you may think that is crazy. But think, ten years before Rodrigo won her Grammys, she was an eight-year-old girl, likely playing in her room with her dolls, toys, or stuffed animals. Thank you, Olivia, for sharing your art; it is fantastic! I love your music, and you are such an inspiration. And thank you for working as hard as you do to perform and entertain your audiences!
